Eating Taco Bell carries a -6 DEX penalty

I was driving home from work on Friday, and really wanted to stop for some shitty Mexican food (read: Taco Bell).  Anywho, the restaurant is right next to a great store called Gamer's Haven.  I used to go to the Sunday D&D sessions therein, but haven't been back in a while.

So I wandered inside to see what was happening in the old girl, and low and behold all the fun times came rushing back.  Memories of fighting necromancers with my party, chasing STUPID FUCKING PIXIES THAT STOLE MY HEALTH POTIONS WHILE I WAS SLEEPING, and having to re-roll a character after a particularly evil DM threw our entire party into the Void of Sorrows and obliterated any chance of returning.

Fun times with some really great guys and girls.  But then I got busy with FOX, and then I was teaching again, and then I was done teaching but I was designing the new graphics package for FOX, and then... well, you see the pattern.  D&D was some awesome fun when I was playing it, but what it came down to was that it wasn't important enough to make time to play.  And that's a good thing.

See, 10 years ago I would have turned down the graphics opportunity, or insisted that my teaching nights be scheduled differently to accommodate the game, or just not taught (which would have been a huge loss in my professional, as well as personal, lives).  Knowing what your priorities are is an important part of maturing, and simply realizing that I made the very prudent decision to drop a recreational activity so that I could better pursue my career goals makes my more happy than not.

But recently one of my nephews expressed some interest in playing a full D&D game with me.  Up until now we've been playing a fun little board game that TSR made to introduce kids to D&D called Dragon Strike, but he wants more.  So, I was looking into getting back into D&D so that I could better play with him or have him play a quest with my group.  Well, it turns out that now the Gamer's Haven D&D Encounters sessions are every Wednesday night, so I probably won't be able to swing getting the little guy up here for a session.

But I can go back.  And besides, the guy is probably a little young to fully get the D&D core rules outside of the board game interface, so I think we'll wait a few years on that anyway.  If he still wants to get more expansive when he's in the upper middle school grades than we'll have to work something out.  And although I hope he still wants to play the full game when he gets older, that needs to be his decision. So, for now, we'll keep playing as long as it's fun.
